3 Signs of a Broken Sewer Pipe

Broken Sewer Pipe

If someone has a broken sewer pipe anywhere on their property, it can cause a lot of problems. Because they are buried underground and tucked away behind walls, floors and ceilings, it can be difficult to tell that anything is wrong when a break first happens. Slow drains, clogs, odors and wet spots may all indicate problems with a sewer line.

Table of Contents

1. Slow Drains

If only one drain in the house is slow, then it is probably a problem with only that one pipe. However, if all of the drains in the house are slow or clogged, then that is a big indicator that something is wrong with the sewer line. Ignoring the issue could result in dirty water backing up into the house and causing damage. Look into sewer repair products to see about fixing the pipe before it gets worse.

2. Odor

One of the most obvious signs that something is wrong with a sewer line is a strong, unpleasant odor emanating from the drains. Properly working drains should not produce bad odors at any time. Sewer gas leaking into the home may not be immediately harmful at low levels, but high amounts can be dangerous to people who are exposed. Try to ventilate the area and have a professional plumber come out to take care of the problem.

3. Wet Spots

Outside of the home, areas of the lawn can become soggy and develop a stench. Over time, this can cause a sinkhole to form that will need to be repaired, along with the pipe. Inside the home, wet spots can cause mold and mildew to form, creating a potential health hazard.

Most people do not think about their sewer lines until there is an issue. Be on the lookout for signs of problems and contact a plumber if anything looks suspicious.
